A Diversion Program for Young Adult Offenders
The Youth Offender Court Program is a twelve (12) month specialty court program designed to provide intensive supervision that will provide fair incentives and sanctions to promote positive behaviors. The goal of the program is to provide offenders with the necessary treatment, resources, and tools necessary to address criminogenic needs as well as developmental issues to promote positive lifelong outcomes. Additionally, the program aims to promote rehabilitation, reduce recidivism, and reduce revocation and imprisonment of participants. Successful completion of the program will provide the participants the opportunity to have their charge dismissed and are eligible for expungement
To qualify, a potential participant must meet the following criteria:
- Be 17-26 years old
- First time offender with no prior felony convictions or probations (including deferred)
- Must enter the program voluntarily and must be willing to participate within the program guidelines
Disqualifying circumstances include, but are not limited to the following…
- Aggravated felony charges – reviewed on case by case basis
- Sex-related offense
- Violent-related offense

The Cameron County Divert Court strives to reduce arrest and incarceration rates of alcohol & drug offenders in the criminal justice system.
It protects the public by identifying, treating, and rehabilitating those who are drug and alcohol addicted. It offers intensive supervised substance abuse treatment and utilizes the concept of therapeutic justice.
The program length consists of a minimum of 15 months and up to 24 months in the program. The Adult Drug Court holds participants accountable and assists them in achieving long-term recovery, becoming law-abiding citizens and successful family/community members.
In addition, successful completion of the program it will allow participants the opportunity to have their case dismissed or an early termination of probation if the case qualifies.
Eligible for expungement if qualifies
The Cameron County District and County Attorney and the Willacy County District and County Attorney will review all candidates to see if participation in a Diversion Court is possible.
-Must be 17 years of age or older and have a case pending before a Cameron or Willacy District Felony Court or a Cameron County Misdemeanor County Court at Law.
-Must have a confirmed diagnosis of addiction to illicit substances or substance abuse disorder that has a nexus to current pending criminal charges or violations of conditions probation.
-Must be a current resident of Cameron and/or Willacy County
Persons recommended to the Drug Diversion Court may not have been charged with the following:
-All 3-G offense are ineligible to participate
-Any incident of Sexual Assault Offenses
-Any person involved in Illegal Trafficking substances or humans
-Any Incident where a firearm is present, possessed or used in the commission of a crime
-Prior incarcerations in any Federal or State Facility
-Gang members
This is not a complete list; any referral for participation may be denied at the discretion of the District Attorney or the DRUG COURT Team.
The Cameron County Divert Court does not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, and age in the delivery of services.
