Street Light Program
The Street Light Program was established to enhance safety and provide essential services to unincorporated communities in Cameron County, which do not have access to city infrastructure. By improving street lighting, the program aims to create secure and well-lit neighborhoods.
Program History
In 2009, the program received the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) Best Practices Innovation Award for its exceptional approach to improving county government facilities, processes, and programs.
Since its inception, the program has made significant progress, with approximately 1,466 streetlights installed across 46 unincorporated communities as of 2025.
Purpose and Objectives
- Enhanced Safety & Visibility: Well-lit streets improve nighttime visibility, reduce accidents, and discourage unwanted activities.
- Increased Community Activities: Encourages outdoor activities, strengthens community ties, and boosts local businesses.
- Easy Billing, Fair Rates & Cost Transparency: Costs are equitably shared among property owners and managed through the Cameron County Tax Office.

See a Streetlight That Needs Repair? Report It!
If you notice a streetlight that needs maintenance, provide the pole number, location, and issue. Our staff will coordinate repairs as soon as possible. Please note that repairs may take several weeks to complete.
Determine the Responsible Authority
- Check if the streetlight is maintained by Cameron County. We do not maintain streetlights within city limits.
- Look for a sticker or label on the pole indicating the utility company responsible.
