Cameron County Airport Completes Fuel Reduction and Habitat Restoration Project

Cameron County is pleased to announce successful completion of the Fuel Reduction Conservation Project at the Cameron County Airport, implemented in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy in Texas (TNC Texas). Initiated in May 2024, the project goals were to reduce the threat of wildfires, protect infrastructure, and enhance the local wildlife habitat, particularly near the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (LANWR).

A critical part of the project was the construction of a fire guard, approximately 9,964 linear feet in length and 16 feet wide, to protect the airport from potential fires and involved managing the brush that was compromising the integrity of the airport’s perimeter fence. The fire guard also eliminated encroaching invasive brush species like huisache (Acacia smallii) along the western boundary and will also safeguard the new perimeter wildlife fence, recently constructed to prevent further brush encroachment.

In addition to improving safety, the project contributed to the restoration of 115 acres of land, enhancing foraging habitats for the Northern Aplomado Falcons (Falco femoralis), a protected species that roams the region. Removing invasive species and managing native grasslands is an essential step in maintaining the biodiversity of the area.

This project did not require matching funds from Cameron County, making it a valuable initiative for both environmental conservation and airport safety. This effort marks a successful partnership aimed at preserving the region’s unique wildlife while addressing safety concerns and ensuring the long-term security of the airport’s infrastructure.

Cameron County Judge, Eddie Treviño, Jr, stated, “Our county airport is more than just a transportation hub – it’s a gateway to our area’s natural beauty and unique character. We’re working hard to maintain and improve our facilities while preserving the habitats that make our region so special. I want to thank The Nature Conservancy in Texas (TNC Texas) for the partnership on this wonderful project.”

“As we work hard to maintain and improve the County Airport, we remain committed to preserving the natural habitats that surround us. This is a critical step in ensuring a sustainable future for our community.
I’d like to express my gratitude to The Nature Conservancy in Texas (TNC Texas) for their collaboration on this incredible project,” Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 3 David Garza stated.

Sonia Najera, TNC Texas, Director of Landscape Initiatives stated, “The grounds are valuable to the business of the airport and as an extension of the regional grasslands, thornforest, and intermittent wetlands. We were happy to work with Cameron County for this win-win solution that improves safety at the airport while also providing important habitat benefits and reducing wildfire risk.”

Cameron County Airport Manager Joe E. Vega stated, “We are excited to see the completion of this project and want to thank the The Nature Conservancy in Texas for their invaluable partnership. This initiative stands as a great example of how public and nonprofit organizations can work together for the betterment of both the environment and the community.”
